Just a Smile

I smile, hopeful that you’ll smile back, and sometimes you do, reflexively, not meaning to, belying a human response to a smiling face, and perhaps a little bit more revealing of how we connect, below the skin where chemistry and electricity animate our lives, a twining of hopes that cross the ineffable gulf of time that separates us, a generation unbridged, a chance to step in faith toward you and you toward me.
