Waiting Remains

In the third week, after the start of the flood, the waters finally crested and began the month’s long recession. The house by house search would wait for summer; the bones in the basement would wait as well, dislodged by the rising waters, now settled around the floor drain, a random arrangement of femur, vertebra, rib, ulna, and skull, the skull prominently featuring a series of holes about the width of a dime, signs of exploratory surgery. Her skeletal remains waiting for someone to find them, reassemble them, justify and find rest for them.
