3207 Steps

That’s how many steps he takes each morning to walk the mile from his cabin to the cave where he keeps his heart lest thieves break in at night to bind him up and rob him of what he counts as precious. Each morning, at first light, he takes 3207 steps, enters the darkness, to listen to the thumping of his heart, to check that he lives for another day. Satisfied, he’s on his way, back to his cabin to till the soil, plant and harvest, focus on the moment, anticipating the next day, and each of those same steps, precise, practiced, a way of confirming his place on the earth before he is returned to ashes.
