The sign said “ROOMS FOR LET” but when he inspected the lodging, he found it to be a single room by itself on the second floor above the apothecary.
“There’s running water in the basin, both hot and cold taps, and a tub in the corner next to the WC. The wardrobe by the bed is big enough, and you’ll have a view of the whole street along with your own private entrance, though, mind you, no entertaining allowed. This is a respectable shop and I’d sooner leave it empty than to risk my reputation at the hands of an indescrete malaprop.”
“I suppose you’ll be wanting both first and last month’s rent in advance,” he said, and along with a handshake between the two, the agreement was settled.
