Tired Old Men

After working at the nursing home for a few weeks, he caught himself adopting the affectations of old men, shorter careful steps, using the handrail on stairs, shaking hands, asking people to repeat themselves because he didn’t understand them, shallow breaths, licking his lips, muttering incomprehensible words to himself, random spots on his skin, confusion when entering a room, forgetfulness in general, loss of sleep, and an overriding sense that everything would soon come to an end, that in spite of his best intensions and effort, the world around him would soon fade into nothing, and him along with it.
